True or false: question about chemistry?

true or false:

1. All atoms of the same element are identical in mass.

2. An electron configuration tells exactly where the electrons are.

3. Atoms in the same group have similar properties.

4. Very little of the mass of an atom is in the nucleus.True or false: question about chemistry?
1. Clearly false. Isotopes of the same element have different masses.

2. False. Electron configuration tells the energy levels of the electron not the physical location.

3. For the most part this is true, like in group IA and the inert gases. But there is a high degree of variability with in the nitrogen family, for instance.

4. Clearly false. Almost all of the mass of the atom is located in the nucleus where the massive protons and neutrons are located.

Now that we've told you the answers to simple questions (which you should have picked up in class), I hope you will be able to do some thinking on your own.

============= Follow up ==============

Touche. Or perhaps it's not a very good on-line class if it leaves you with questions like this. I've never thought that on-line classes were as effective as face-to-face instruction. Perhaps this keyboard-to-keyboard instruction is a mild improvement.

What you may read on-line or in a textbook is not always as simple as when you get to ask questions of an instructor where you can ask follow-up questions and where the teacher can, too.

For instance, you must have had some uncertainty about these questions, otherwise they wouldn't have shown up here. Clearly being told ';true'; or ';false'; isn't as useful as actually understanding the chemistry behind the question. So what is it that you don't understand about these topics?True or false: question about chemistry?
1. False - there are isotopes of elements which have MORE or LESS neutrons than the element on the periodic table.

2. I don't really clearly understand this question. If you are talking about where the electrons physically are in an atom, then no it's false because it is impossible to tell EXACTLY where electrons are in any atom. But, if you are talking about the electrons relative to where they are in molecular orbits, then the answer to this question is TRUE.

3. True - elements sharing the same group have similar properties. Look at the halogens, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, etc.

4. False - the protons and neutrons are located in the nucleus and they are the atoms with the most mass. The electrons have smaller masses than both neutrons and protons.
